** collaboration with John Henry Blatter
Born Québec, Canada - Lives and works in Nashville, Tennessee. sculpture + installation media contact + links documentary cv + statement On a conceptual level, much of the work I am currently engaged in revolves around personal place, identity, and impermanence. I have crossed North America by car five times and have seen 46 of the 50 contiguous states, and most Canadian Provinces in the process, making me a sort of visual sociologist/anthropologist. As a result, much of my studio practice has been steered into a direction that repositions experience and history by exploiting visual and semiotic relationships, images, objects and architecture. Over the years, travel and exploration has become an essential part of my creative research -- every conversation, image, and interaction is analyzed and processed in search of ways to integrate into my work. It is perhaps because of this unending process that my work tends to span various media from wood and cardboard to photography and sound. Rather than working in any one specific medium, I prefer to allow content to dictate materials. This allows for the inherent quality and language of different media to perform in their most efficient way.
In the process of research and production, identity is often questioned due to a nagging uncertainty about my own personal place in the order of things. Since the age of twelve, I have lived in the U.S. as a Canadian with French and Cree ancestry. Thus I have become intimately familiar with notions of alienation, exploitation, assimilation, and conformation -- concepts I find revolting yet intriguing in terms of how they can be both manipulative and manipulated to influence power and culture. While many of these ideas are explored in my work, I strive to maintain an objective perspective that allows multiple entry points into the work
On a more practical level, I tend to work with modular elements in order to lend certain flexibility to creating environments that respond specifically to individual spaces. These elements are often fabricated to reiterate content in an artificial way, (i.e. real wood masked with wood-grained contact paper) creating a secondary, or artificial relationship that falls short of authentic – similar to experiencing a postcard. While the overall image reads as a narrative, the details reveal nuances, allowing the work to appear frank on a macro level and complex on a micro level. Creative Statement
